The basic idea behind this game was to turn chess from a PvP (player versus player) game into a PvE (player versus environment) game. It’s basically Plants vs. Zombies but with chess pieces instead of plants and zombies.
The enemy spawns are designed to gradually ramp up in difficulty and prevent players from maintaining a stable position for too long. At the beginning of the game, you’ll mostly be facing pawns and knights, which have limited movement range and give the player time to react. Later, the more dangerous bishops start appearing, which can move across the board and threaten a game over within two turns. Finally, in the endgame you face rooks and queens, which can potentially end your game in one turn if they have a clear path to your end of the board.
The piece shoppe was added when testing revealed that losing pieces was very unfun, as it reduced the number of options on the board at the same time that the game was getting more difficult. The piece shoppe gives losing players the opportunity to come back from a poor board position and make up for any pieces they may have lost.
